HardtPhil Hardt, BA, MA, Phd (Person with HD) has served as Chief Volunteer Officer of the Huntington's Disease Society of America (HDSA) Arizona Affiliate for the last three years and prior to this served as a member of their board of directors for four years. He initiated anonymous genetic testing in Arizona for those with Huntington's Disease (HD) and has been the Director of the Arizona HD/At-Risk Retreat for the last three years. He approached the National Center for Neurogenic Speech and Swallowing Disorders and worked with them to produce a training video, entitled: "Management of Speech and Swallowing Disorders in Huntington's Disease," which was broadcast live to over 500 medical and training institutions nationwide on April 30, 2003. This video contains clips of 7 Arizona Phds, at various stages of HD, and their families that he and another Phd videotaped. In July, 2004 he finished identifying and coordinating participants with HD for the worlds first Hearing and Comprehension study, conducted by the Speech and Hearing Department at the University of Arizona in Tucson. He is an advocate of caring for people and helping them raise their quality of living!

As a national speaker and advocate for HD, he has been a guest speaker of 16 chapters, 27 support group meetings and 5 Annual General state meetings for HD nationwide. Last year he also spoke at four international conventions for the Associazione Mauro Emolo O.N.L.U.S., in Italy. Phil gave a keynote "reform" address at the 2001 HDSA national convention in San Diego where he was honored as HDSA Person of the Year for his contributions to the HD community. That year he also served on the convention's main Steering Committee. His "reform" address was videotaped by the Michigan Chapter and made into videotapes that were sent to each Chapter across the country. In addition, his "Living Positively with HD" speech was played on their public access television station for several months to help raise awareness of HD.

Phil was also honored the same year with the 2001 HD Lighthouse "Making the Light Brighter" award. He is the hdwarrior@hdlighthouse.org and has touched the lives of thousands with publications, programs and hope. He has written numerous handouts to help families who are "bleeding in the trenches," to raise their quality of living, including "Step by Step Social Security Application Guidelines," the "Zero Suicides" awareness program, and the "HD At-Risk Preparation Checklist," all on the HD Lighthouse.

Phil was also a founding board member of the Dementia Advocacy and Support Network International and President of this organization for two years where he was instrumental in getting a person with dementia to be a plenary speaker at the International Alzheimer's Association in Spain. He was also a past board member and President of the Cochise County Historical and Archaeological Society for two years where he coordinated docents and museum artifact cataloging.

Prior to becoming symptomatic with Huntington's Disease over eight years ago, Phil worked for Allied Signal (now Honeywell) Automotive and Aerospace divisions as a Senior Buyer, Materials Manager and as an Operational Excellence Six Sigma "Black Belt." Preceding his tenure with Allied Signal, Phil was a Central Control Room computer technician and Sulfuric Acid Plant General Foreman at a copper smelter for Phelps Dodge Corporation. Phil also served on an all-volunteer ambulance for over five years. In addition, during the evening and on weekends Phil taught 11 semester hours of Computer Science, Computer Programming and English classes at the Arizona State Prison Complex and at Cochise College in Douglas, AZ for eleven years.

Phil attributes being given his "second chance in life" to continue speaking, writing and advocating for Huntington's Disease to the quality of care and treatment he has received from Dr. Kuhnau and now Dr. Luis Velazquez.
